Uttakleiv is a small coastal community on the north side of Vestvågøy, where a dramatic mountain landscape meets a beach of sand and large rounded stones. With only around 22 permanent residents, the area has a strong sense of place and is maintained by the local farming community. Visit Lofoten highlights Uttakleiv not only for its scenery, but also for its cultural landscape and the community's work to care for the area as visitor numbers have grown.
The beach faces the open sea and is one of the places in Lofoten where you can experience both the midnight sun in summer and northern lights in winter. Its combination of rounded stones, ocean, grassy slopes and dramatic mountains makes it particularly interesting for photography, especially when the weather adds movement and atmosphere to the scene.
Uttakleiv is also connected to Haukland by the old coastal road around Veggen, the mountain known as "the Wall". The road was once the main route to Uttakleiv before the tunnel opened in 1998 and is now an easy, mostly flat walk with views along the coastline. From Uttakleiv, you can also hike towards Mannen or Himmeltinden, making the area a good base for combining beach photography with mountain views.
The rounded stones. They give Uttakleiv a foreground few other Lofoten beaches can match, in any weather and under any sky.

Walk along the shoreline and experiment with the large rounded stones in the foreground. Looking back towards the mountains gives you the classic Uttakleiv composition, while turning towards the open sea creates a much more minimal image.

Follow the old gravel road around Veggen for changing views of the coastline. It is an easy alternative to a mountain hike and works particularly well for wide compositions and leading lines.
Uttakleiv works particularly well in dramatic or changing weather. Clouds moving across the mountains, low light and wet stones can add considerably more atmosphere than a completely clear day. In summer, the beach faces the midnight sun, while winter brings the possibility of photographing the northern lights over the open sea. For calmer images, visit around sunrise or later in the evening when the beach is quieter. After rain, look for reflections between the stones and wet surfaces along the shoreline.

Walk the old coastal road towards Haukland, then return to the shoreline as the light changes. If conditions and your experience allow, combine the visit with Mannen for an elevated view of both Uttakleiv and Haukland.
Uttakleiv has a dedicated parking area managed by the local community. Parking is handled through automatic licence plate recognition, so there is no need to take a ticket. Registration and payment are handled through YouPark. The parking fees help support the infrastructure and services provided for visitors and the local community.
Uttakleiv is a small, privately owned farming community, and parking is not free. Visit Lofoten currently lists automatic licence plate parking at NOK 60 per started three hours for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, with a maximum of NOK 300 per 24 hours. There are toilets year-round, parking, a rest area and seasonal facilities for campers. The fees contribute to maintaining the infrastructure and landscape for visitors.
Despite being a small coastal community, Uttakleiv has developed several facilities to accommodate the growing number of visitors. Public toilets are available at the beach, with the local community responsible for maintaining them. Tourist hosts and guides are employed during the summer season to help visitors, coordinate parking and look after the area. The visitor infrastructure has been developed largely through the efforts of the local community association, which has invested in parking, toilets and visitor services as tourism has increased.
Uttakleiv is still a small local community, so please use the designated parking areas and toilets, follow local signs and help keep the beach and surrounding landscape clean. The facilities and services exist because the local community has put significant time and resources into making the area accessible to visitors while protecting the place they call home. Because this is also someone's home and working landscape, stay on appropriate paths, respect private property and leave the area as you found it.
