ABOUT AUSTNESFJORDEN

A large-scale landscape without a demanding hike

Austnesfjorden is one of the strongest roadside panoramas in eastern Lofoten, combining a broad fjord, steep mountain walls and the distinctive Sildpollneset peninsula. The elevated viewpoint gives the scene natural depth, with water and shoreline leading toward the mountains.

It works particularly well for photographers who want a large-scale landscape without a demanding hike. Changing weather can transform the view quickly, from clear layered panoramas to atmospheric scenes with cloud wrapping around the peaks.

WHY PHOTOGRAPHERS COME HERE

Depth for free: water and shoreline lead the eye to the peaks, and Sildpollneset gives the panorama a focal point.

LIGHT & CONDITIONS

Soft directional light and broken cloud

Soft directional light gives the mountains depth, while broken cloud can create attractive patches of light across the fjord. In winter, snow simplifies the landscape and increases separation between the dark shoreline and surrounding peaks. The open northern sky can also make the viewpoint useful for aurora photography when clouds cooperate.

PHOTO TIPS

Bring a wide-angle and a short telephoto

The wide view is impressive, but the strongest images can come from isolating the chapel, peninsula and repeating mountain ridges. In calm conditions, watch the water for subtle reflections rather than expecting a perfect mirror.

PRO TIP

Do not stop after the first wide panorama

Change focal length and simplify the scene: Sildpollneset against the mountain wall can be more distinctive than trying to include the entire fjord.
