ABOUT EGGUM

Space, simplicity and calm

Eggum offers a completely different perspective compared to the enclosed fjords of southern Lofoten. The landscape opens fully toward the ocean, creating a sense of space, simplicity and calm. With few dominant foreground elements, the focus shifts entirely to light, horizon and atmosphere.

This is one of the best places in Lofoten to experience the midnight sun, where the sky remains soft and luminous for hours. The subtle transitions in colour and light reward patience and observation.

WHY PHOTOGRAPHERS COME HERE

Midnight sun over an open Atlantic horizon, and a sculpture that changes its face as you walk around it.

How to get the best shots

WHERE TO STAND

Along the coastline, using rocks or the horizon as anchors

The Head (Markus Raetz)

Walk approximately 1.5 km beyond the settlement along the gravel road towards the sculpture. The Head is designed to change its appearance as you move around it, so do not photograph it from just one position. Walk completely around it and look for different relationships between the sculpture, ocean and mountains.

Eggum village

Walk back towards the small settlement and photograph the houses, fences and surrounding landscape. The compact village makes a nice contrast to the much larger coastal environment around it.

Coastal path towards Unstad

If you have more time, the coastal route towards Unstad gives you a wilder perspective of the coastline. It is particularly interesting for landscape photography because the settlement gradually disappears and the ocean and mountains become the dominant subjects.

LIGHT & CONDITIONS

Low, directional light and moving weather

Eggum is particularly rewarding in low, directional light and changing weather. The exposed coastline can look completely different when clouds, wind and waves move through the landscape. In summer, the area faces the midnight sun, making late evening and overnight photography especially interesting. The low sun can illuminate the mountains and coastline while the settlement remains relatively dark. For atmospheric images, do not avoid cloudy or windy days. The open Atlantic and exposed position of Eggum often look more dramatic when the weather is moving through.

PHOTO TIPS

Coastline as leading line

  • Use the coastline as a leading line towards the mountains and open ocean.
  • Photograph The Head from several positions; its form deliberately changes as you walk around it.
  • Include people walking towards the sculpture to give the landscape a sense of scale.
  • Look for contrasts between the small houses of Eggum and the vast landscape behind them.
  • A longer lens works well for compressing the settlement against the mountains.
  • Use a wide lens around the coastline when the sky is dramatic.
  • At midnight sun, try shooting along the coast rather than directly towards the sun to capture warmer side light on the landscape.
  • Do not overlook the old farm buildings and small details around the settlement; Eggum's character comes from the relationship between the working landscape and the coast.

PRO TIP

Walk all the way to The Head

It is easy to stop at the rest area and photograph the coastline, but the 15–20 minute walk adds another layer to the experience. The sculpture is designed to reveal a different face from different angles, so take your time walking around it rather than treating it as a single viewpoint.

BEYOND THE CAMERA

Gallery, café and a place to stay

Eggum is a small settlement, so accommodation and food options are limited compared with places such as Henningsvær or Svolvær.

Galleri Eggum

Galleri Eggum is a small gallery housed in a former farm dating back to 1878. Surrounded by Lofoten's rugged coastline, the gallery showcases paintings and graphic art by local artist Rolf Aarøe Arnesen, whose work focuses heavily on the changing light, colours and dramatic moods of Lofoten. Visit Lofoten currently lists the gallery as open approximately from 24 June to 15 September, generally 11:00–18:00.

Where to stay and eat

Eggum Rorbuer offers a local option if you want to stay close to the coast and photograph the area during the quieter hours. For a café stop, Kvalhausen Kafe is nearby on Eggumsveien. For a wider choice of accommodation and restaurants, it is worth staying in the surrounding Vestvågøy area and visiting Eggum as part of a day exploring the outer coast.
