ABOUT SUND

Fishing heritage in buildings, boats and harbour details

Sund is a small fishing village on Flakstadøya, surrounded by rugged mountains and the open sea. Its collection of traditional buildings, boats and harbour details gives it a strong sense of Lofoten's fishing heritage.

The village is also home to one of Lofoten's oldest tourist attractions: the Sund Blacksmith and Museum, where the traditions of the local smithy have been preserved for generations.

How to get the best shots

WHERE TO STAND

Around the harbour, old fishing buildings and waterfront

Sund harbour

A good starting point for photographing the traditional buildings, boats and surrounding mountains. Look for compositions along the waterfront where the boats, wooden structures and mountains create natural layers.

LIGHT & CONDITIONS

Soft morning or evening light

Soft morning or evening light works particularly well around the harbour, bringing out the textures of the old wooden buildings and boats. Cloudy days can also add atmosphere, especially when the mountains disappear into mist.

PHOTO TIPS

Textures and small details

  • Use 35–70mm for details of the old buildings, boats and harbour.
  • Look for textures, reflections and small details that tell the story of the fishing village rather than only photographing the wider landscape.
  • The harbour is especially good for layered compositions, with boats or buildings in the foreground and mountains behind.

PRO TIP

If the smithy is open, go inside

The workshop itself offers great detail shots, especially the tools, forged objects and atmosphere of the traditional working space.

BEYOND THE CAMERA

The Blacksmith of Sund

A smithy since 1947

The historic smithy was established by Hans Gjertsen in 1947 and is still operating today. Gjertsen famously presented his handmade cormorant sculpture to King Olav V during the opening of the E10 in 1963, despite initially being refused permission to approach the King. Today, Tor-Vegard Mørkved, who began as Gjertsen's apprentice in 1987, continues the blacksmith tradition and runs the smithy and museum.

PHOTO TIP

If the smithy is open, the workshop itself offers great detail shots, especially the tools, forged objects and atmosphere of the traditional working space.
