ABOUT VIKTEN

Cinematic in almost every direction

Vikten is a small coastal village on the north side of Flakstadøya, known for its beautiful sandy beach, dramatic mountains and wide open views towards the Norwegian Sea.

The landscape here feels particularly cinematic. The contrast between the soft curves of the sand dunes, the rugged mountains and the open ocean creates strong compositions in almost every direction.

Vikten is also home to small local craft workshops, adding a human and cultural element to the otherwise wild coastal landscape.

WHY PHOTOGRAPHERS COME HERE

Dunes, beach curves and enormous mountains in one frame, with a quiet village and a working glass hut for the cultural layer.

LIGHT & CONDITIONS

Soft light, and shadows across the mountains

Soft light works beautifully at Vikten, especially when clouds create shadows across the mountains. Early morning brings a calmer atmosphere and soft light across the beach. Late afternoon and evening give warmer tones on the mountains and sand, particularly on clear days. Windy or slightly overcast conditions can also work well here, adding movement and drama to the ocean and clouds.

PHOTO TIPS

Get low and use the dunes

  • Use wide to mid-range focal lengths (24–70mm) to combine the beach, mountains and ocean.
  • Get low and use the sand dunes or beach curves as leading lines into the frame.
  • For a more intimate composition, look for details in the sand, grasses and rocks rather than always photographing the entire landscape.
  • A person walking along the beach can add a strong sense of scale against the enormous mountains.

PRO TIP

Do not stop at the first viewpoint

Walk along the beach and explore different angles. The relationship between the dunes, ocean and mountains changes dramatically as you move. For the most peaceful compositions, visit early in the morning or later in the evening when the beach is quieter.

BEYOND THE CAMERA

Glasshytta Vikten

Northern Norway's oldest glassblowing hut

At the far end of the village is Glasshytta Vikten, Northern Norway's oldest glassblowing hut. Founded in the 1970s by Åsvar Tangrand, it is now run by his son Anders, who continues the family's glassblowing tradition. The workshop creates distinctive, rustic glass pieces using materials and textures inspired by the surrounding landscape. One particularly local detail is the quartz stone used in the glasswork, collected from the mountain above Vikten.
